ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Paediatrics is an important branch of medicine that could not be over emphasized. The good health of young babies and children form the basis and foundation of them becoming healthy individuals later on in life.
Babies and children differ from adults in body weight and size. The physiology of babies and children therefore would be different from adults and would require good care and expertise in the management of medical problems surrounding them.
The role of a paediatrician includes:
i) | early recognition of medical problems to prevent disease progression in young infants and children |
ii) | general examination of a newborn to identify congenital defects, genetic and hereditary disorders |
iii) | monitoring of growth and development of infants and young children with early screening of developmental disorders which include autism |
iv) | identification of hearing impairment, visual difficulties and speech delay |
v) | providing information for parents regarding the importance of immunization in preventable diseases in Malaysia for example whooping cough, polio and measles |
vi) | allergy and nutritional advice for the parents |
vii) | to allay anxieties and fears and providing guidance regarding parenting issues surrounding their children |
viii) | safeguarding the health of young babies and children |
As our children are the leaders of the future, their health and well-being are of utmost importance. The earlier the problem is identified the better it is for the family. Health experts have recommended regular health checks and screenings of your children with your paediatrician with the aim of achieving a healthy nation in future.
